Is Cars growing up?
Compared to the rest of Pixar’s output, the Cars franchise has always skewed young. But it looks like Lightning McQueen may be heading in a more mature direction in Cars 3.
For starters, there was that shockingly dark first teaser, which sent McQueen hurtling through the sky after a fiery crash. Then there was that first trailer, which was all about McQueen’s legacy. Not exactly the stuff of elementary school playground talk.
The latest Cars 3 focuses on the rivalry between McQueen and Jackson Storm. The latter is a younger, sleeker, faster competitor who forces McQueen to face the fact that he just isn’t what he used to be.
It’s a notion that should resonate with adults who just can’t believe how old we’ve become. But will the 12-and-under set respond to it in quite the same way?
We’ll find out when Cars 3 pulls into theaters June 16.
