The internet has a lot of feelings about the next Doctor, who just so happens to be a woman. Gasp!
But, David Tennant has weighed in on all the chatter and, well, he thinks Jodie Whittaker is the perfect choice.
“I’m delighted. She’s been on Broadchurch for three seasons so I know her very well, she’s a mate of mine,” gushed Tennant, appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
He said the decision to cast Whittaker is “brilliant” and he “can’t think of someone better to join the gang.” How lovely. He added that Whittaker will take the role to a “whole new level.”
Asked about the online backlash over the new Doctor’s gender, Tennant laughed it off. “Whenever the Doctor changes, there’s always a backlash because that’s a character that people love,” says Tennant.
“Sure Jodie’s from a different gender than anyone who’s gone before but that will be irrelevant almost immediately once she takes the part,” Tennant added.
He said what’s important is finding the “right performer at the right time.”
“And that’s Jodie, without a doubt.”
