Have you ever wondered why some people seem hardwired for adventure? These are the folks who will taste the most obscure street food in far off places and seem to love travel more than others.

We’re not just talking about the occasional weekend getaway or weeklong vacation — but instead the urge for endless exploration and constant discovery. As it turns out, we might have our genes to thank for this trait.

Curio Collection by Hilton studied a so-called “curious gene” to hone in on this genetic discovery. Following the experiment, the brand launched the “Are You Curious?” quiz, which lets people discover what drives their curiosity, and recommends hotels and resorts to satisfy their unique wanderlust.

The science behind the study

Some people — about 20 percent of the population — possess the “curious” or “wanderlust gene,” which is scientifically known as DRD4-7R. According to scientific studies, DRD4-7R is associated with higher levels of curiosity.

To dig deeper into this idea, the Collection launched the “Curious Gene” program, where they worked with a genetics lab and research partner and sponsored the DNA testing of a group of influencers to determine if they have the DRD4-7R gene. Through in-depth studies of the influencers and existing scientific information on the behavioral phenotype associated with the curious gene, researchers created an algorithm to classify curiosity into five unique curiosity “types.”

The quiz not only helps you uncover your curiosity type, but it also recommends Curio Collection by Hilton hotels or resorts that are tailored to your type, leaving you inspired to seek out your next adventure.

So, if people who are born with DRD4-7R have an inherent curiosity that drives them to travel, does this mean our genes are also responsible for our love of exotic cuisines or thrilling outdoor activities? Curio Collection by Hilton, a portfolio of hotels and resorts known for their unique character and personality, wants to encourage travelers to explore the natural curiosities that motivate us to seek out those one-of-a-kind discoveries.

Read on to discover your curiosity “type” and get a recommendation for where you should travel next.
